Nevada, particularly the Reno-Sparks area, is a major data center market with state tax abatements for qualifying facilities. On May 14, 2026 the Reno City Council voted 6-1 for a temporary moratorium on new data center construction permits (through December 31, 2026 or until new rules are adopted) — the first Nevada local government to do so — with four pipeline projects exempted. On June 1, 2026 the Council voted 6-1 to extend the moratorium through August 31, 2027 (or until new regulations are adopted). Not all Nevada cities followed: on July 22, 2026 the Henderson City Council rejected a proposed 180-day moratorium in favor of case-by-case development agreements. Separately, Boulder City is seeking a construction stay and Interior Board of Land Appeals relief after learning the BLM authorized a data center by amending an existing 2023 solar permit rather than opening a new public review. Nevada's first countywide ban followed on August 19, 2026, when Nye County commissioners voted 5-0 to prohibit data centers in the Pahrump Valley and the Basin 162 groundwater area after a meeting that drew hundreds of attendees and more than two hours of public comment. A companion measure (No. 2026-14) establishes land-use regulations and special use permitting for data centers elsewhere in the county.
